Electricity:Utility Companies
Nebraska is the only state in the nation served with electricity
totally from public power. Nebraska's public utilities have ample electric
generating capacity to meet present and future needs. An efficient "mix" of
power is produced with water (17% hydro) and low-cost fuels (53% coal, 14%
nuclear, and 16% natural gas), ensuring a dependable supply of low-cost energy
for years to come. Also, four wind turbines were recently constructed. Competitive
utility rates make Nebraska an excellent location for industries. Nebraska's
overall electric rates are 20% below the national average.
Natural Gas:Utility
Companies
Both electric and natural gas energy sources are easily accessible
throughout the state. The pipelines of two major companies, Northern Natural
Gas and K N Energy, a division of Kinder Morgan, provide an ample supply of
natural gas to most areas of the state. Depending on usage requirements, natural
gas is offered both on a "firm" and "interruptible" basis.
Telecommunications:Utility
Companies
Nebraska is also served by one of the nation's most advanced
telecommunication networks. Of major importance is the fact that any customer
located in any of Nebraska's communities can be served by 1.544 mbs lines and
multiples of 1.544 mbs with a vast majority served by 45 mbs and multiples
of 45 mbs. Nebraska is the first state in the nation to be served totally by
digital switching. Nebraska also was the first state in the nation with a statewide
Frame Relay (Packet Switching) Network.
